"Humiliation" is not a word used often with immigrant issues, but it rings totally true to me. As a first-world white person, I have been humiliated and, even with a bad memory, can tell you everything about those incidents; They could have sunk me, but I practiced the resiliency that many immigrants do - not shrugging it off (I couldn't ) but but working harder out of pride and resentment.
