When The Alienist came out it was everywhere - sort of like The Davinci Code but a hell of a lot better - and it was weird that at the time no one picked it up for a full length movie (and this was way before long form tv hit its golden age with The Sopranos, Mad Men, True Detective, Fargo, etc.).
So when it was announced that Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) was going to direct and serve as an executive producer for a series on TNT it seemed like a no brainer - switch out southern Louisiana's 1990s industrial landscape vibe for New York City in 1896 and young women with young male prostitutes and it would be a hit. Add Oscar-winning Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth as an executive producer, a $5 million per episode budget, and director/writer John Sayles to the writing team and it couldn't miss.
Then Fukunaga dropped out due to budget negotiations and was replaced with Jakob Verbruggen (Black Mirror, House Of Cards), and the production was moved from Canada to New York and then Budapest. A sure fire hit seemed not to sure anymore.
On the plus side it stars Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning.
I really hope it doesn't suck and captures the creepy vibe of the original.
